The digital newspaper
is going to be designed and applied for a certain level in a classroom but
aimed at the whole school. It is going to be developed by the students of sixth
grade of Primary Education. This grade is composed by three different classes (A,
B, C), who are in charge of producing the newspaper each term. It will be
coordinated either by the English teacher or the tutor. Children will make the digital
newspaper during their school timetable, two hours per week (one at the English
lesson and the other at tutoring session).
The main
objectives for our Project are:
-To develop abilities
either in composition or Graphic Communications
-To use ICT media as tools for the designing of the digital newspaper
-To develop some strategies of reading and writing in the classroom
-To develop creativity
-To distinguish the most relevant information
-To establish a link
between the school and the community
-To encourage values
such as friendship and solidarity among the students
-To foster the
cooperation, the communication, the leadership and the teamwork
The class in charged
of the project will make four groups of 6 people each (there are 24 students in
the class). Each group will work in different sections:
1. Scholar News and
Worldwide News
2. Leisure time:
sports, music and events
3. Collaboration by means of the email such as recipes, stories and recommended films.
4. Puzzles
Children will have to
be in agreement in order to make the different groups of working. Then, the
teacher will distribute the different sections through a draw in order to avoid
conflicts, so each group will focus on a specific section.
Within the first three
sections they also have to decide the roles of each component into the group:
-Two redactors
responsible for the writing of the news
-One editor
responsible for the reviewing of the news, which must be corrected before their
publication
-Two graphic artists responsible for the designing of the digital newspaper, who are in charge of
images, texts and colors
-One reporter
responsible for the search of pieces of news
As an exception, the
last group (the puzzles group) will have another internal organization:
-Two students are in
charge of math puzzles
-Two students are in
charge of language puzzles
-Two students are in
charge of presenting a comic
Because this last section has got less
workload hours, this group will help the other sections. Apart from that, in
the first month of working all the groups will have a general meeting in order
to select the main topic of the newspaper, as for example: In the 1st term there will be
Christmas activities, in the 2nd one Easter material
and in the 3rd one (and the last one) about summer
holidays issues.
Moreover, one time per
month, children who composed each role group will meet together in order to
share all the information that they have collected and they have to put
together the different contents of each sections of the digital newspaper. As
well, they have to be critical with their school mattes´ work and if it is the
case, they could correct it and give some advices to them.
Some tools which
students may use are the following:
-‘Microsoft word’ to
make a draft
-‘Gimp’ to edit images
-‘Movie Maker’ to make
videos for the survey section
-‘Google’ to search
for some information and images

Another important
issue will be the creation of an e-mailbox in which all the students at school
can participate introducing interesting news and opinions. The group in charge
of the newspaper will have to collect and select the information and then reflect
it in the newspaper section.
Furthermore, we have thought of making a
section about surveys. This section is going to be related to our Didactical
Resources area, as we have to do some videos using the ‘movie maker’ app. We
consider that it would be useful to integrate this task in the newspaper.
Some topics that we
have chosen are about:
- Sports
- Cinema
- Travelling
- Charity
Children who are
in charge of the newspaper should do those videos and then present them to
the whole school community. Then, all the classes will have to vote and decide:
- Some sports selected
so as to do a scholar sports competition
- Some movies selected
just to make a cinema festival
- End-of- year trip
between three different options
-
Some charitable activities according to the children's interests and
involvement.
All the videos and the
options selected will be published in the newspaper in the section on survey.
This one also will include a questionary in order to know what people think
about the digital newspaper, as well as any positive or negative points.

The reason of why we have chosen that information from these links, in order to make our example of digital newspaper, is that we found it very interesting and entertaining for children.
